After world war 1, wrestling promoters began to exert their control over the business of wrestling. The most significant aspect of this control became the adoption of fake (or "worked") matches at the expense of legitimate contests. The promoters recognized that predetermined finishes kept fans interested in their prododuct and left wrestlers at their mercy.
